![]() This is, however, true of every machine we’ve tested in this price range. ![]() The brew system and the steam wand run off the same heat source, so we had to wait 15–20 seconds after brewing before we could steam milk. What we didn’t like about the Breville Barista Express Impressīesides the name, which is a real tongue twister, we don’t have many complaints about the Barista Express Impress. Breville also improved the machine’s built-in grinder by almost doubling the amount of settings for grind size, and adding a smart timing system that automatically updated to maintain around 18 grams of espresso for a double shot, even as we changed beans and grind settings. The Barista Express Impress has a lever on the side of the machine that depresses a tamper with both the correct pressure and at the correct angle. You have to do it with just the right pressure and at just the right angle. That’s because tamping (compressing the coffee grounds in the portafilter) is one of the most important (and easiest to mess up) parts of brewing espresso. Though the addition of the tamper might seem small, it completely changed the experience from the very similar Barista Express, which has a grinder but no tamper (the older high-end Breville models, the Barista Pro and Barista Touch also didn’t have the tamper system). ![]() This is a semi-automatic machine with a burr grinder and a tamper built in.
